Reverse osmosis removes dissolved contaminants that carbon filters can't, including fluoride, lead, arsenic, and PFAS, by pushing water through a semi-permeable membrane rather than relying on adsorption alone. To keep an RO system performing, most pre-filters need replacing every 6–12 months and the membrane every 2–3 years.
