Sediment filters are the first line of defense in a whole-house system, removing dirt, rust, sand, and silt before they reach your plumbing, appliances, and downstream filters. This collection covers cartridges from Pentek (DGD, R30, and P-series), American Plumber's heavy-duty line, GE, 3M Aqua-Pure, Watts, and Harmsco Calypso Blue, plus Rusco spin-down filters, in sizes from 10 x 2.5 to 20 x 4.5 inches.
The key decision is the micron rating, which ranges from 1 to 50. The lower the number, the smaller the particles it catches, but finer filters also clog faster:
If your water carries a lot of sediment, consider two stages: a coarser filter first to catch larger particles, then a finer one. This keeps the fine filter from clogging quickly. Spin-down filters work well as a first stage on well water, since you can flush them rather than replace them.
Once you know your micron rating, match your housing size and the part number on your current cartridge. For the most popular whole-house size, see 20 x 4.5 Inch Sediment Filters.
